Fury vs Schwarz Preview and Predictions

If Tyson Fury had needed a reminder of the risks involved in becoming complacent for a fight he is entering as a significant favourite, it came on June 1 when Anthony Joshua was so unexpectedly and convincingly stopped by Andy Ruiz Jr, writes Declan Warrington.

That dramatic evening altered the heavyweight landscape as much as Fury once did when, in 2015 and as the underdog, he outpointed Wladimir Klitschko.

Only with victory at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand on Saturday can he truly capitalise on Joshua’s defeat.

Fury is once again widely considered the world’s leading heavyweight and the intention of his next fight, against Germany’s Tom Schwarz, is largely to continue to enhance his profile in the US ahead of a lucrative rematch with Deontay Wilder next year.

Joshua had also hoped to fight Wilder, potentially making the fact he did not do so before suffering his first defeat particularly costly – and it is that victory for Ruiz Jr that Fury’s trainer Ben Davison believes has made Schwarz more dangerous.

Witnessing the way Ruiz Jr, written off amid the many physical disadvantages he faced, has transformed his life could easily have inspired Schwarz, who similarly is considered to be physically and technically inferior to the classy, polished Fury.

Of the world’s leading heavyweights, Fury possesses the finest defence, footwork, boxing IQ and quickest hands. He also has a more impressive engine than his fleshy physique suggests, appearing to leave Schwarz with little chance of success unless, like Ruiz Jr, he can somehow land his own life-changing punch.

At 6ft 5.5ins he is also not small, and yet against an undefeated fighter of 6ft 9ins well-versed in using his range his task becomes even more intimidating.

His greatest hope comes in using his youth – at 25 he is five years younger than Fury, and also fresher – and strength to tempt Fury into a brawl and away from using his impressive boxing abilities, and relying on the same grit that means he has secured 24 victories without a solitary defeat.

There have been times before now that Schwarz has been tested physically and he has succeeded. That he is also yet to box at this level is also potentially to his advantage – unlike with Wilder, far less is known about him for Fury to prepare for – and he is arguably as likely to be inspired by the bright lights of Vegas and the occasion as he is to suffer amid its intense glare.

Fury has been complacent multiple times when he has been the favourite, which he is this weekend at just 1/33 (the same price as Joshua two weeks ago) in the Fury vs Schwarz odds. The fact he produced his finest performances against Klitschko and Wilder when he was expected to suffer defeat, also gives the German – who boxes and moves soundly – some hope.

Among his problems, however, is that Fury boxes and moves far more impressively. Even if Fury lacks power at the highest level, if he is not complacent – and his first fight in Vegas and increasing maturity, focus and composure are likely to guard against that – his boxing brain is good enough that he will soon be able to read a largely one-dimensional opponent and nullify any potential threat.

It is not a stretch to compare the Fury vs Schwarz fight to Fury’s against Dereck Chisora in 2014, when his in-form, smaller and one-dimensional opponent struggled to land a glove on Fury. The ‘Gypsy King’ repeatedly succeeded with authoritative jabs until the durable Chisora was withdrawn in the 10th round.

The first round or two are likely to be as dominant for Fury as those that follow them, making Fury to stop his opponent the first of our Fury vs Schwarz betting tips at 4/9.

For bigger boxing odds, the second of our Fury vs Schwarz predictions is the Briton to win in rounds 10-12 which can be backed at 13/2.
