India vs New Zealand (Tue)

India pipped Australia to top spot at the weekend and are rewarded with a semi-final against New Zealand, whose form has tailed off.

The Kiwis won five of their first six games with the other against India being rained off.

They looked certainties for the semi-finals at that stage but lost their last three games and only qualified due to a better run rate than Pakistan, although leading wicket-taker Lockie Ferguson was rested against England and should return in Manchester.

India are firm favourites at 3/10 having won 4-1 in an ODI series between these teams over the winter but New Zealand were finalists in 2015 and also beat India easily in a warm-up match at The Oval.

They dismissed India for just 179 and reached their target in just 37.1 overs for the loss of four wickets.

India captain Virat Kohli said: “Decision-making will be crucial. Both teams are experienced enough to have played these games. New Zealand are a quality side. On the day, whichever team is more brave, I think that team stands a better chance to win.

“It’s up to both teams to bring their ‘A’ games and then whoever handles pressure better is the team that’s going to come out on top.”

New Zealand have a habit of overachieving and although India deserve to be favourites, the Black Caps are the value selection at 49/20 as the first of our Cricket World Cup predictions.

Australia vs England (Thu)

Australia’s defeat to South Africa on Saturday means the old enemies meet again with a place in the Cricket World Cup final at stake.

Australia have the psychological advantage of beating England during the group phase but Saturday’s loss was a setback while the hosts beat India and New Zealand in impressive style to book a place in the last four.

The toss could prove vital with England having batted second in all of their three group-stage defeats.

The opening partnership of Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow will also be crucial, with the pair having reeled off three successive century stands in the tournament.

They have now reached three figures 10 times in 32 innings together, with their average opening stand sitting at 67.70 – the highest in one-day international history for partnerships of 20 innings or more.

England’s damaging back-to-back defeats, by Sri Lanka and Australia, came when Roy was absent with a torn hamstring but he featured in a warm-up match in May which Australia also won.

The pace of Mitchell Starc could make the difference and the Aussie paceman is the leading wicket-taker at the Cricket World Cup 2019 so far.

For that reason, we think Australia are worth backing at 6/5 to complete our Cricket World Cup betting tips.
