Taylor will take to the oche for the final time at Alexandra Palace aiming to secure an astonishing 17th World Championship title before retirement.

Taylor will be hoping for a repeat of his last appearance at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool earlier this year when he rolled back the years to beat Gerwyn Price, Raymond van Barneveld, Michael van Gerwen, Adrian Lewis and Peter Wright en route to a 16th World Matchplay title.

He will start his campaign against the up-and-coming Chris Dobey, who was beaten by Dave Chisnall on his World Championship debut last year, in the first round on Friday night.

“It will be a big challenge for me,” Taylor told PDC.tv. “Chris has made massive strides in the last couple of years and is wanting to make his mark, but I can go up there relaxed because I’ve nothing to lose.

“It’s my final World Championship and I want to enjoy it.”

Van Gerwen is the overwhelming favourite at 4/6 to retain the title he won against Gary Anderson last year.

The Dutchman, a two-time world champion, enters the tournament in a rich vein of form after winning four of his last five events, including the Grand Slam of Darts.

He appears to have a tricky first-round tie to navigate as he was drawn against compatriot Christian Kist.

Van Gerwen will face strong competition from the likes of Anderson (13/2) and Taylor but number two seed Wright’s participation is in doubt after the Scot was rushed to hospital with suspected gallstones earlier this month.

Rob Cross has produced some of the most consistent performances on the circuit over the last 12 months and can be backed at 14/1 to win a maiden title on his first appearance at Ally Pally.

Irishman Daryl Gurney is 40/1 to follow up his World Grand Prix victory in Dublin in October, his first major TV title, with a maiden World Championship crown.
