Darren Till is intent on establishing a lasting legacy within the UFC as he looks to upset the odds in his home city of Liverpool this weekend.

The popular Merseysider is a slight underdog at 21/20 in the UFC betting to overcome number one ranked welterweight Stephen Thompson at UFC Fight Night 130 at the Echo Arena on Sunday night.

Victory would go a long way to establishing the unbeaten Till’s credentials in the division and could even lead to a title shot against 170lb champion Tyron Woodley.

Till (16-0-1) has won all of his five fights in the UFC and is not content to be among the also-rans in the company.

The 25-year-old said on UFC.com: “Maybe some fighters are happy just being in a certain position in the UFC, walking into places and having people say ‘there’s a UFC fighter’.

“I don’t want that type of life for myself, I want to be the greatest fighter ever. There are lot of obstacles to overcome before I get there.

“It’s my own goal to be the greatest, I don’t want to be second best, I want to be the best. I’m not scared of any man alive inside or outside the octagon.”

Till stunned Donald Cerrone in the first round last October in Gdansk, and is 2/1 to clinch a second successive stoppage and 7/1 to do so inside the opening five minutes again. But in Thompson (14-2-1), who is 10 years his senior and a 3/4 favourite, Till knows he cannot be complacent.

The American only just came up short in a pair of contests against Woodley, who retained his crown after a draw in in November 2016 before triumphing by majority decision in the rematch four months later.

Till added: “He’s not a God. He’s good, yeah, but he’s not a God. I just want the big challenges and Steven is a big challenge. Why not go for the biggest challenge? I can just see this being a great fight and I’m going to win.”

We agree this has the makings of a great fight but Thompson’s extra experience should be decisive and for our Till vs Thompson prediction, we’re going for the American to triumph on points at 5/2.
