Poker game rules: Hi/Lo and 2-7

What are the rules for Hi/Lo games?

Hi/Lo games, such as Omaha Hi/Lo and Stud Hi/Lo, split the pot between the best high hand and the best low hand.

  • The high hand uses standard poker hand rankings.
  • The low hand must contain five unpaired cards, all ranked 8 or lower.
  • A player can win both halves of the pot. This is called a scoop.
  • The best possible low hand is 5-4-3-2-A. This hand is also a straight for the high hand.
  • If no player has a qualifying low hand, the entire pot goes to the high hand.
  • There is always a winning high hand because the high hand has no qualification requirements.

What are the rules for 2-7?

2-7, also called Deuce to Seven, is a draw poker game where the lowest-ranked hand wins.

There are two versions:

  • Single draw: You can discard cards or stand pat once. There are two betting rounds.
  • Triple draw: You can discard cards or stand pat up to three times. There are four betting rounds.

How are hands ranked in 2-7?

  • Aces are high and are bad for your hand.
  • Straights and flushes count against you.
  • The best possible hand is 7-5-4-3-2, with the cards not all being the same suit.
  • Suits don't affect hand comparisons.
