If you love live poker then heading to the city of love for some live poker sounds like a lovely idea. Cupid’s arrow is in flight and the bullseye is FPS Paris, which takes place July 15-23 at the Stade Jean-Bouin. If you’re on the fence about playing, or this is the first you’re hearing about this tournament, here are seven reason to play FPS Paris.

Big fields and huge guarantees

Back in February, the EPT touched down in Paris and it’s fair to say you, the players, were passionate for poker in Paris. Many records were broken and there were over 2,000 entries in the FPS Main Event.

Whilst we may not reach that number in July, the organisers are preparing for a four-figure-field as the €1,100 FPS Main Event has a shiny €1,000,000 guarantee, which guarantees a pretty payday to those who make a deep run.

Even if the Main doesn’t work out for you, with 25 tournaments (including satellites) on the schedule they’ll be plenty of opportunities to return home with a spadie, so leave some room in your luggage, just in case.

Qualify for Less Online

Heading to a foreign city to play poker, even one as recognisable and accessible as Paris, can seem stressful. Booking travel, accommodation and making sure you’re registered before events sell out are hassles that most players would rather do without. One way to reduce those stress levels is locking up a Main Event package before you even set off for Paris.

Online satellites to the Main Event are running on PokerStars, and the full package, worth €2,600 includes Main Event entry, accommodation and travel money. The next qualifier takes place on July 2nd and guarantees two packages. You can buy-in directly for €162, but can also play sub satellites priced €7.50 and €16.50 respectively.

Of course, you can also win a package via the Power Path. A Silver Power Path Pass is worth €2,500 and for FPS Paris that package consists of Main Event entry, Cup entry (€330), €880 expenses, limited edition merchandise, Players Lounge access, live event liaison support and exclusive sporting and tourist activities.

Good Evening Sports Fans

The eagle eyed amongst you with have already spotted that the venue for the poker tournament is a sports stadium. Pretty rare for a poker tournament. The Stade Jean-Bouin has a capacity of just under 20,000 and is the home stadium of the Stade Français rugby team and FC Versailles football team. Fans of sporting stadiums are in luck as it’s a stones throw from both the Parc des Princes and Roland Garros, meaning you can put those tournament breaks to good use and go and take a look at two iconic sporting venues.

See the Tour, whist on tour

Speaking of sport, the world’s most famous cycling race, the Tour de France starts on July 1st and finishes on July 23rd. The final stage of the Tour de France coincides with the final day of FPS Paris and, even if you’re not the biggest fan of the race, you probably know that the final stage takes place in Paris. An ideal opportunity then to take in the parade, which concludes on the Champs-Élysées. It’s a short 25-minute hop on the Metro from the poker venue to the Champs-Élysées.

Culture Vulture

Should you run out of chips then you’ll not be short of alternative forms of entertainment. Paris’s status as one of the world’s major global cities is well founded. Music, media, fashion, history and the arts all contribute to its status as one of the world’s major global cities.

A look at Trip Advisor’s top things to do in Paris offers up the following: Eiffel Tower Guided Tour, River Cruise on the Seine, Lourve Museum (check out Mona Lisa’s poker face), Versailles Palace tour, Moulin Rogue Cabaret Show and Paris Catacombs guided tour.

If the culture you desire is checking out all the different poker rooms that Paris has to offer then our very own ‘trip advisor’ Howard Swains penned this guide during EPT Paris.

Proximity to the UK and Ireland

Travel time and cost are two factors any poker player needs to mix into the equation when deciding to travel to play a poker tournament.

It might surprise you that It’s almost as quick to travel from London to the Stade Jean-Bouin, as it is to travel to Blackpool. Via Eurostar the journey time to Paris clocks in at 3hrs 22 minutes, whilst it’ll take 2hrs 44 to reach Blackpool. Even if you decide to drive then it’s a similar picture with it taking just 43 minutes more to reach Paris from London.

It’d be remiss of us not to mention the cost difference at this point, a return train ticket from London to Blackpool is roughly £100 less than the equivalent Eurostar journey.

We also looked at the journey time to Paris and Blackpool from Edinburgh, Cardiff, Belfast and Dublin. Only with Edinburgh was the journey, and the time spent travelling, significantly easier if trying to get to Blackpool. From the other capital cities, assuming you’d fly to Paris, then the journey time was quicker to Paris, than Blackpool.

So, are you the beach or city break type?
