EPT Barcelona: Jamie Dwan’s breakout year just keeps getting better
If you’re making a list of the biggest breakout stars of the year in poker, the top spot is almost always reserved for the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event winner. And it’s hard to argue with the logic–if you play a non-high-roller event and walk away with $10 million, you’ve not only broken out, you’ve skipped the breakout phase entirely and gone straight to poker royalty.
So let’s take this year’s champ, Lucas Jumalon, as read (congratulations, Lucas). Who’s next on the list?
Our answer would have been Jamie Dwan, even if he hadn’t absolutely stormed his way through EPT Barcelona this past week, most recently winning a €25K High Roller for €134,096 on Tuesday (Aug 25).
It was only a month and a half ago that the Brit played his first $50,000 buy-in in Las Vegas and won it. Dwan topped the $50K WSOP High Roller, defeating one of the toughest fields ever assembled to win $2.2 million and his maiden bracelet.
His fine form has continued upon arrival back in Europe. Before heading to Barcelona, Dwan stopped by the Goliath festival in Coventry, England and took down a £2K High Roller for £47,200.
And over the past week, he’s cashed six events, made five final tables, won one title, and enjoyed a podium finish in another huge high roller (this time, one of the Super variety).

- €1,650 PokerStars Open Main Event – 25th for €20,530
Understandably, this kind of form made Dwan a top pick in the PokerStars and Poker.Org Pick 3 EPT Barcelona Main Event competition, but alas, that one didn’t go his way.

FROM POLITICS TO POKER
Jamie Dwan has a slightly more interesting pre-poker story than most modern players.
He went to Manchester University to study Politics and International Relations at Manchester University when he was 18 and soon found himself running as a Liberal Democrat candidate in the Stalybridge and Hyde constituency.
We first spoke to Jamie Dwan when he was a 24-year-old up-and-comer playing his first €10K at EPT Monte Carlo 2024
In doing so, he became the UK’s youngest parliamentary candidate and although his campaign wasn’t successful, it did lead to jobs within the party as a Political Assistant, Field Organiser, and ultimately a role as a Local Assistant for European Parliament.
“Then Brexit happened and we all lost our jobs,” he told back in 2024. To make matters worse, the COVID pandemic began around the same time and Dwan suddenly found himself with a lot of free time on his hands.
That’s where poker entered the picture, and clearly, he’s never looked back.
