The London Marathon 2023 takes place on Sunday 23, April – whether you’re running it or cheering someone on, we’ve researched some interesting facts and created a motivational marathon playlist.
Did you know?
The first London Marathon was in 1981, a total of 7055 runners set off from Blackheath in South London and as many as 6,255 completed it.
For the 40th race in 2020, a whopping 457,861 applied to run the race. Of those, 373,736 applicants were from the UK, while 84,125 runners entered the international ballot.
Gillette was the first-ever sponsor of the London Marathon.
It’s not unusual for couples to get married during the London Marathon! The first couple who tied the knot during the race were Mick Gambrill and Barbara Cole in 1999.
Although there are multiple records related to the London Marathon, Jenny Wood-Allen holds the record for being the oldest runner to finish the race in 2022. At the time, Jenny was 90 years old and completed the course in 11 hours and 34 minutes.
