Muerto En Mictlán – An Aztec Wonder

August 12, 2023

A multi-day annual festival that is celebrated in Mexico to honour deceased friends and loved ones, Day of the Dead is one of the most important traditions in the nation with roots that date as far back as 3,000 years.

The entirety of Día de los Muertos, as it is known in Spanish, is marked by a host of vibrant colours which each represent some unique emotion or feeling. All of this is accompanied by jubilant dancing, singing mariachi bands, picnics, and parades full of participants wearing flower crowns and intricate skull makeup.

For those who would like to party like the Aztecs once did in a setting just like the one described above, there’s a popular online slot game which allows players to experience a journey through the ancient Aztecan underworld of Mictlán, appropriately named, Muerto En Mictlán. Let’s discover all that there is to be seen in this polychromatic themed title.

Get to Know the Symbols and Characters

In Muerto En Mictlán, players are presented with a 5-reel, 3 row game screen with 10 fixed pay lines. This is set against a backdrop of an authentic Mexican town that is amid Day of the Day celebrations, as seen by the colourful banners strung from the streetlights and orange flowers lining the ground.

This is where our story begins with the help of Catrin and Catrina, a pair of guides who lead players through the Moon Kingdom to the Kingdom of the Sun in order to enter the ancient land of Mictlán. Of course, both characters are decked out in funky facial makeup and accessories. Catrina, the slot’s highest paying symbol, wears skull earrings and a red rose in her hair, as Catrin sports a black top hat encircled by its own skull and set of dark green flowers.

Other symbols include lower value spades, diamonds, and hearts as well as Catrina’s rose and Catrin’s top hat. The wild is a white skull with orange flowers at its neck and substitutes for all previously mentioned symbols when it lands on the reels. Four additional wilds appear during the free spins round, but we will discuss this more in-depth below. Lastly the spirit scatter symbol is depicted by a mysterious bright purple circle which can land, once at a time, above any symbol.

Available Bonus Features

Muerto En Mictlán is jam-packed with bonus features, mainly those dealing with opportunities for more wilds which can take place during the Mictlán free spins game. Here, players are thrust into this feature when they land a spirit scatter on at least 3 reels. Their reward? Free spins which gradually increase according to the number of scatters they collect in their respective level.

For example, 11 scatters in level 3 equals an additional 5 free spins, with a total of 20 available. Each level allows players to choose from 1 of 4 wild features: sticky wilds, expanding wilds, exploding wilds, and walking wilds. Additionally, during base game spins there is the win multiplier feature which, as its name suggests, subjects players’ winnings to multipliers of x1, x2, or x4. These multipliers can increase to as much as x30 in the free spins round. So, what are you waiting for? Light your candles and hit the reels!
