Why Do Some People Believe in Lucky Charms at Casinos?
Whether you’re holding out for an interview for your dream job or enjoying playing at an online casino, it is intrinsic to our nature to want to seek patterns and create meaning from our experiences. This, in part, is the reason we do specific rituals, cling to lucky charms or look for meanings in signs or symbols. When it comes to potentially winning money, people tend to put a lot of faith in such things, but – spoiler alert – luck has nothing to do with it, at all! But let’s dig deeper and find out more anyway.
Lucky Charms
Superstition revolves more around traditional and cultural thinking rather than rational or logical and can be found in many areas of our lives; however, it is most commonly found in gambling. This could be certain colours, numbers, or even horseshoes and rabbit feet.
The power of these beliefs is generally harmless and could even lead to a player being more engaged in a game and enjoying it more when they have on their lucky shirt or have won with their lucky numbers. On the other hand, players may continue to bet on a number or colour they firmly believe is lucky even though they have no evidence to support this theory, which isn’t great for their enjoyment of the game or their bankroll.
This ties back to an idea called the “gambler’s fallacy,” which is the belief that something has a greater chance of happening because it has not happened in a while.
How Control Plays a Role
Wearing a shirt that a player perceives as lucky, carrying a charm, or performing a certain ritual before you open your computer and log in to play a game gives them a sense of control over the outcome. Control means we as humans may engage in behaviour we wouldn’t normally do, as we think the result will be positive (like our chances of winning may have increased). Of course, no player has control over any casino game, as they are all determined by chance.
Placebo, Anyone?
The placebo effect relates to superstition in that a person’s performance may improve if they do certain rituals or carry their lucky charms, even if it may not influence the outcome. What the placebo effect does help with is reducing anxiety and boosting performance, which ultimately leads to a player’s enjoyment of a game more than anything else.
This means that whether they win or lose, players can still feel a sense of engagement and leave with the belief that their overall playing experience was a positive one. Also, even if they have no way to determine the outcome, they feel a small sense of control over their environment, which leads to a deeper, more meaningful time.
The Luck of The Draw
Truthfully, lucky charms and beliefs in specific numbers and colours are more common than we would think, whether in gambling or in everyday life. How often have we wished upon a shooting star or blamed the full moon for our actions? Can you honestly say you have never gone the other way when a black cat has crossed your path or been a tad wary to buy anything on Friday the 13th?
As we have said, these beliefs and superstitions are harmless, as long as they don’t affect your day-to-day life too much. If you start needing to build in an extra hour before leaving home to complete all your rituals, then perhaps it’s time to reevaluate how much power you are giving an external force. After all, ultimately, we are masters of our own fate.
