How NFTs Could Be Used in Online Casinos

December 4, 2023

The NFT concept shot to fame at the beginning of 2021 when a long-time digital art creator, Beeple, conducted what is known as a “drop” in which a variety of his works sold for a total just shy of $70 million.

NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, are now all the rage, with everything from basketball cards to Tweets being minted as NFTs, to then be sold via online NFT marketplaces.

So, how long before we see this phenomenon make its way into the realm of the online casino and how exactly would they be used?

What Is An NFT?

An NFT is a unique digital asset stored on the blockchain. Unlike cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, which are interchangeable, each NFT is one-of-a-kind and cannot be duplicated, making it ideal for collectibles, art, or exclusive virtual items.

Common Myths About NFTs in Casinos

NFTs are only for digital art.
While NFTs became famous through art, they can represent anything unique, including memberships, or in-game items.

NFT integration requires cryptocurrencies.
Some platforms will allow NFT features without using crypto directly, offering wallets and asset trading in traditional currencies.

NFTs make games riskier.
NFTs don’t impact core game mechanics. They add collectibility, they don’t change odds or increase stakes.

NFTs In Online Casino Environments

So how exactly might we see NFTs being used in the online casino environment? It’s likely that most uses will be collectables and aesthetic enhancements, but NFTs can also have valuable other benefits for players and collectors.

NFTs as Prizes

The first and most obvious usage of NFTs in the online casino is to offer them as alternative prizes. This could have widespread appeal among players who are well versed in the workings of cryptocurrencies and the systems that make them tick.

This adds intrigue, as the value of any given NFT can fluctuate greatly, meaning players would have to think carefully about whether to be renumerated in standard FIAT (traditional) currency or in the form of an NFT.

It adds a unique twist to the prize format to know that the value can fluctuate for the better (or worse).

NFTs as Unique Player Assets

Another potential use of NFTs in online casinos could be for player avatars or in-game items that are truly unique.

These could take the form of exclusive chips or themed table seats that are NFT-verified and owned by players.

Just like in traditional gaming, where cosmetic items are sought after, casinos could add prestige and a sense of personalisation through these limited digital assets.

This opens up exciting possibilities for social or VIP features. For instance, high-rollers might be rewarded with ultra-rare NFTs that provide real-world perks like free hotel stays, entry to tournaments, or bonuses.

These NFTs wouldn’t just be for display, they’d have tangible benefits tied to them, further enhancing the online casino experience.

It is highly likely that sooner rather than later NFTs will appear in some capacity in online casinos, but exactly how remains up for debate.

FAQs

What is an NFT in simple terms?

An NFT (non-fungible token) is a digital asset that represents ownership of something unique, like artwork, collectibles, or virtual items.

Are NFTs already being used in any online casinos?

While not widespread yet, a few blockchain-based casinos have started integrating NFTs for rewards and VIP access.

Do I need cryptocurrency to own an NFT?

In most current systems, yes, but that may change. Future platforms could offer NFT purchases via debit/credit or in-game currencies.

Can NFTs increase my winnings?

Potentially. Because the value of an NFT can fluctuate, it’s hard to determine its long-term value. This might mean that an NFT prize or asset becomes significantly more or less valuable over time.

Are NFTs safe to use in gambling environments?

Like all digital assets, NFTs require secure handling. Reputable casinos will ensure encrypted wallets and verifiable ownership, minimising risk.
