Pucker Up This International Kissing Day

June 29, 2024

July 6th is a very special day for one reason: it is International Kissing Day! Of course, any day (and every day) is a good day to bestow a kiss on someone you love, but there’s something to be said for honouring a practice that binds us to our loved ones on one special day every year. Kissing Day originated in the UK but went international in the early 2000s.

The aims of this day are many: to give you a chance and a good opportunity to finally kiss your crush on the cheek, to remind us that love is an important part of life and that a kiss is a wonderful thing for many reasons. The euphoria when you get a win at the casino tables, for example, prompts you to kiss those closest to you in celebration. It’s simple, it’s free, and it shares love with those around you.

Why Do We Kiss Our Loved Ones?

Like many modern practices we still hold dear, kissing was passed down to us by the Romans. There were three forms of kiss back in their day: the osculum (a friendly kiss planted on the cheek), basium (a loving kiss on the lips), and savium (a passionate lover’s kiss).

Though the most famous kissing term is probably the French kiss, it didn’t really come from the French at all. It is most likely that this term came from British and American servicemen posted in France during World War I. It was clear to the soldiers that Gallic women didn’t mind public displays of intimacy and frequently employed rather passionate kissing techniques than the American and British women they knew, who were more reserved.

There are many reasons that people kiss. A simple, chaste kiss can be a greeting and is employed, even when meeting complete strangers, in many parts of the world, mostly Europe. A kiss may be bestowed upon another to show your affection towards that person- either familial, friendly, or romantic.

A study conducted last year pointed out that public displays of affection, primarily kissing, are strongly linked to real love and relationship satisfaction. You may kiss your significant other to tell them that you’re ready for a little intimate time together or to show them that you desire them. A kiss may be given to increase your emotional connection to your partner. The oxytocin released when you kiss can strengthen or forge an emotional bond- so do it as often as you can! A kiss can also be a litmus test for your feelings of attraction towards a potential partner. You might feel that this could be the beginning of a romance, but if you kiss and there’s no spark, you’re likely to be better off as friends.

Simple Pleasures

International Kissing Day began to remind us that love and beauty are all around us, even in the most seemingly mundane of situations. It is a reminder to us that a kiss can bring you closer to those around you and that it’s important to honour the connections we have in our lives. Whatever the kind of kiss you’re able to give or receive, that level of affection is special and should never be taken for granted, as human connection is so important in our lives. Giving a kiss can put a smile on the faces of both parties because it reminds them they have love in their lives.

Famous Kisses in Popular Culture

Kissing has played an unforgettable role in films, television and popular culture for decades. Some of cinema’s most iconic moments revolve around a kiss, often providing the emotional climax to a story. Whether it’s a romantic reunion after a long separation or the first kiss between two characters who have finally admitted their feelings, these scenes have become part of popular culture because they capture emotions that almost everyone can relate to.

One of the reasons these moments resonate so strongly is that a kiss often communicates far more than words ever could. Happiness, relief, excitement, affection and even forgiveness can all be expressed in a single gesture. It’s no surprise that directors frequently use a kiss to conclude a romantic storyline, leaving audiences with a memorable ending that celebrates human connection.

Of course, not every famous kiss comes from romance. Victorious athletes kissing trophies, family members embracing after significant life events, or friends celebrating major achievements all demonstrate how kissing extends beyond romantic relationships. It has become a universal expression of joy, affection and celebration, making it one of the simplest ways people share meaningful moments with those around them.

Celebrating Life’s Little Victories

International Kissing Day is also a reminder that celebrations don’t always have to involve grand occasions. Sometimes it’s the smaller moments that deserve recognition just as much.

Think about the feeling of finally completing a challenging project, receiving good news you’ve been waiting for, or spending quality time with family after a busy week. These everyday victories often prompt natural displays of affection, whether that’s a hug, a high five or a kiss shared with someone close to you.

Casino players experience similar emotions during an exciting gaming session. While every game should always be enjoyed responsibly and purely as entertainment, there’s no denying the excitement that can accompany a memorable win or a particularly enjoyable evening. Many players instinctively turn to the people beside them to celebrate, sharing smiles, laughter and sometimes even a congratulatory kiss with a partner or loved one.

These spontaneous celebrations highlight something important about International Kissing Day. The occasion isn’t simply about romance—it celebrates connection in all its forms. Sharing positive experiences with others often makes those moments feel even more meaningful, whether you’re enjoying a meal together, watching your favourite sports team, or spending an evening at the casino.

A Tradition That Continues to Bring People Together

Although International Kissing Day has grown into a global celebration, its message has remained refreshingly simple. In an increasingly busy world, it’s easy to overlook the small gestures that strengthen relationships. A quick kiss goodbye before work, a kiss on the forehead after a difficult day, or a celebratory kiss after achieving something together can all help reinforce the bonds we share with family, friends and partners.

Scientific studies continue to highlight the emotional benefits of physical affection, but most people don’t need research to appreciate how comforting a genuine display of affection can be. A simple kiss can communicate encouragement, gratitude, reassurance or excitement without saying a single word.

That’s perhaps why International Kissing Day continues to resonate with so many people. Rather than encouraging extravagant gestures, it celebrates something almost everyone can do. A small act of kindness that costs nothing but can brighten somebody’s day. Whether you’re marking the occasion with your partner, greeting family members, or simply taking a moment to appreciate the important people in your life, July 6 offers the perfect excuse to celebrate the connections that make life richer.

After all, life’s happiest moments are often the ones we share, and sometimes a kiss says everything that words cannot.
