The Evolution of Casino Floor Layouts: From Classic to Modern Designs

It’s fair to say that the casino industry has undergone a major facelift in the last few decades. Whereas once the layout and overall design of a casino was considered an afterthought, that has now completely changed and modern day casinos often have to strike a balance between the games that they offer and how a casino looks and feels. 

With so much evolution having taken place over the years, let’s take a step back and explore this in more detail. 

Casinos are no longer as uniform as they used to be

As we have already reflected above, when casinos began to boom, the ideal scenario was for customers to get packed in like sardines and for the casino floor to look very uniform.

Slot machines would often be the same size and shape, and each bank of machines would be numbered and aligned the same. The casino floor was full of lots of lines and lots of squares.

A decent sized casino would aim to have around 3,000 different games and machines, so that gives you an idea of how a casino floor would be ordered and arranged. 

As casinos have developed and grown, those organising casino floor plans have had to be way more detailed with how they organise their offerings.

Nowadays casino goers want to experience so much more than just games. Restaurants, bars and even nightclubs all have to be considered and nowadays floor plans are much more flexible and fluid. 

In order to cater for so many different tastes, it’s now believed that a modern day casino now caters for half of the amount of games than they would have done a few decades ago. These days no casino floor is the same and each one has its own identity and unique feel.

Table games starting to take more of a prominence 

Back at the height of the casino boom, the undoubted star of the show were slot games. Whilst table games have always been important to a casino to help create an atmosphere, the endless nature of slot machines and the variety they offer have seen them drive vast amounts of revenues.

However, as time has developed casino goers have put more of a premium on the social experience that they want to have. Therefore gradually, tables have began to eat into the space that slots used to occupy and this has led to a much more spacious casino floor. 

The increased prominence of the tables have led casinos to design a flow, which means that the whole casino has been meticulously planned out so that each part of the casino can be accessed and used. 

Comfort and green spaces are crucial 

Whereas back in the day, comfort wasn’t exactly at the forefront of a casino owner’s mind, it’s a different story these days. 

Often there is no expense spared when it comes to comfort and plush gaming chairs are commonplace. In order to create a relaxed and comfortable environment, casino owners will invest in green spaces or areas where guests can take a break. 

Helping set the mood and keeping guests happy and engaged, these spaces wouldn’t have even been a consideration years ago but now are absolutely vital in helping create a real point of difference. 

With casino owners valuing the wellbeing of their guests, the fact that floor space has been given up for these areas has been seen as a positive development and should be a feature that is here to stay.
