11 Tricks That Some People Swear by

June 28, 2024

Rolling the dice or trying to win requires something beyond anyone’s control or influence – luck and plenty of good fortune. There are no shortage of little tricks that many people swear by (but, as we know – it’s all hokum). Anyway, let’s take a look at what they are.

Knocking on wood removes bad luck

Do it once, and nothing happens, but do it twice and bad luck is washed away…or so the urban myths go. No matter what happens, there’s nothing wrong with having a little habit that puts someone in a positive state of mind.

It’s a quick and easy thing to do, and one that no one else will even notice. Ideal when a habit that keeps all the good luck in one place so one person can have it is what’s needed!

Now that we’ve covered how to banish bad luck, it’s about time we took a look at how to bring more good luck into the world.

Finding a four-leaf clover is truly lucky

Believe it or not, clovers come in sizes all the way from three-leaf to seven-leaf, but it’s the four-leaf ones that bring the luck and good fortune people want. There are some who have been swearing by the so-called “luck of the Irish” for centuries, with some even going as far as carrying a pressed four-leaf clover in their wallet or purse.

While finding a four-leaf clover can be a little tricky at first, the truth is that there’s plenty out there when the luck is flowing. Find one, another soon appears, and even the worst run of bad luck will feel like it’s starting to turn. Ideal when it’s time to have fun and enjoy life.

Carrying a gemstone is spiritual and lucky

The beauty of this one is that it honestly doesn’t matter which gemstone is chosen. While many people opt for the safety and security of their birthstone, there’s a lot to be said for branching out and trying something new. Whichever stone that’s picked, one thing is for sure: the luck will start to shine.

Many people believe wholeheartedly that a gemstone can reflect negative energy and life forces in a way that leaves the holder protected from bad luck.

Wishing upon a stray eyelash is timeless

Every day, an eyelash falls to the floor without any of us noticing, but when it stands out, make sure to wish upon it. While this may sound like an urban myth or old wive’s tale, it’s been around for centuries for a good reason…could it be because it might just work?

Giving it a go is so quick and easy that there really is nothing to lose. On the flip side, the burst of good luck that may come with it might just be enough to open doors no one will be able to believe.

Seeing a shooting star in the sky

Shooting stars are comets that light up the night sky and blaze a trail right the way to the horizon. They’re beautiful and mesmerising and have a habit of popping up at the most unexpected of times. Could there be anything more magical to wish upon this evening?

The tricky part is that shooting stars can be few and far between at certain parts of the year. This is because their appearance in the night sky is largely dictated by our planet’s own orbit. Never fear; a little patience and a keen eye will make sure that perhaps the most dazzling sign of good luck is never missed or overlooked.

Wishing on a rainbow could bring more than gold

While everyone wishes for the pot of gold that sits at either end of the rainbow, science says you will never reach it. But rather than letting the optimists out there get down, think about all the other good things that could happen.

The beauty of the rainbow superstition is that there’ll be one in the sky sooner rather than later, thanks to the British weather. At least some good could come from all that drizzle.

Blowing out all those birthday candles matters

Blow them out, make a wish, and then stand back while the whole world changes. Okay, it might not be quite that simple, but the idea is a good one. The wishing experience only happens once a year, which means making it count is what truly matters.

Some players who want to increase their bankroll, or businessmen who want to sign a contract, might think birthday wishes are just for kids.

Scratching an itchy palm could make the difference

Sweaty palms may signal tension and pressure that’s about to cause someone to break, but itchy palms are a sign that good luck is just around the corner. In fact, rather than finding a corner to walk round, all that’s needed is a quick scratch with the other hand. This is all that unlocking this ancient source of good luck and good fortune requires.

Does it always work? Leaving an itchy palm unscratched is the guaranteed way to make sure this question is left unanswered. Finding the right balance is all about scratching, keeping a positive mind, and then scratching again the moment the itch comes back.

Finding an old horseshoe is always a good omen

If there’s one ritual on this list that will rival the four-leaf clover in popular culture, it has to be the horseshoe. The truth is that no one really knows or can agree why it’s such a lucky thing to find — they just swear by the good fortune and strokes of luck that seemingly follow as if by magic.

Could it be because a horseshoe used to be a handy tool or accessory that could be reused? Probably not: no one thinks they’ve struck it lucky when they find an old boot or a worn-out old running shoe. The truth is that as long as the luck is out to play, no one cares about the history of how it all got started.

Tossing salt over the shoulder is a classic

Last but by no means least, toss as much salt over the shoulder as possible, as long as it’s been spilt first. It’s no use tossing salt straight out of the bag or reaching for a shaker — that would just be a crazy thing to do and a complete waste of salt!

Legend has it that this ritual started back in the day when monks wanted to make sure that evil spirits weren’t going to interfere with their important work. Surely no one these days wants to become possessed by, or get hounded by, an evil spirit either? Given just how much protection it can provide and the good luck that comes with it, it’s a wonder that more people aren’t tossing every last grain they can find.

Final thoughts

The beauty of a good old lucky superstition is that it costs nothing. There are no promises or guarantees when it comes to good luck.
