The Importance of Table Limits in Roulette
What’s fun about roulette is that the game offers players a variety of possibilities when it comes to wagering. Even so, there are certain limitations that enthusiasts should note because table limits are ever present, so it’s useful to know their importance.
In most bricks and mortar or online casinos, table limits will be applied in every roulette game. It can be found written or indicated in a notice on or round the table and players who wish to place a bet should make a point of reading it. The dealer may make a point of showing you the sign or explaining the terms.
These play indicators are called ‘table limit notifications’, and the information clearly states the limitations of roulette betting observed at the casino.
Table limit signs may contain the following:
- Min chip denomination – example. £2.00
- The Min inside bet – example. £20.00
- Min outside bet – example. £20.00
- Max inside bet – example. £200.00
- Max outside bet – example. £4k
- Any Way to the Number
Novice roulette players may not understand the term ‘any way to the number’ – that’s not surprising because the meaning is not transparent from that statement alone. To help explain, read the passage below.
Chip Denomination
Players buy chips that they’ll use to bet with from the dealer. A stack may contain 20 chips for example, and each chip will have a different minimum value. This concept applies to both digital and land-based casinos.
In the UK, for example, a chip might be worth £1.00, the player has to pay £20.00 for a single stack to gamble and that means they get 20 chips. In some casinos, a player who just entered the game may be required to purchase higher than the minimum value of their chips.
In this case, the dealer will put a marker on the rim of the roulette wheel (lammer). Lammers helps the dealer know the value of that player’s chips.
Table Limits in Roulette – Minimum (Inside and Outside)
For both inside and outside bets, the table minimum might be the same. But some casinos treat either of which differently. To explain the concept, consider this illustration:
- Table Limit and Chip Value: The table minimum is £15.00, meaning players must bet at least this amount to participate. Each chip is worth £2.00.
- Betting on Outside Bets: To meet the £15.00 table minimum, a player needs to wager a sufficient number of chips. Since £15.00 divided by £2.00 (chip value) equals 7.5, the player must bet at least 8 chips (you can’t use half a chip). Outside bets include options like betting on red or black, odd or even, or a dozen numbers (e.g. 1st dozen: 1–12).
- Restrictions on Chip Placement: The chips can’t be randomly spread. For example, if the player bets on black, they must place at least 8 chips on Black to meet the minimum requirement. If they also want to bet on the 1st dozen, they must place another 8 chips on that wager.
- Flexibility in Bet Types: While meeting the table minimum, the player has the freedom to choose the type of bets they make: Inside bets only (e.g. specific numbers). Outside bets only (e.g. red/black, dozens).
- A combination of both. The key is that the player must respect the table’s minimum betting rules (£15.00) regardless of their strategy.
Table Maximum (Inside and Outside Bets)
The table maximum limit, for instance, in an inside bet, varies from place to place. Some have it between £15.00 and £1,800. There are establishments that set the limit in this manner – max inside bet – £200.00 any way to the number. This means that the player can make a forward bet for as low as £200.00, a Split for £400.00, or a corner for £800.00, while each of the bet feature a similar number. For outside bets, the amount may vary between £500.00 and £10k, depending on the establishment.
Any Way to the Number
Novice players take note – ‘Any Way to the Number’ means that a player can bet the table max on every possible bet to be made. Should the max be set to £1,000.00, they can absolutely put in £1,000.00 for a Straight-up bet, the same amount on a split, or on a column.
Table Limits in Roulette
Knowing the table limit details will help players make well-informed decisions, especially on how to manage their stake and prevent betting violations and most of all, table limit embarrassment.
